Support Investments in Indiana Trails

Gov. Eric Holcomb has proposed investing an additional $50 million in the Next Level Trails program to expand trails, walking and biking infrastructure in the Hoosier State.

In addition, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, the Greenways Foundation of Indiana and the Indiana Legislative Trails Caucus is asking for funding to support trail maintenance, a statewide trails economic impact study and agency capacity to deliver trail-related programs.

I urge you to support the proposed 2024 budget increase of $50 million for the Next Level Trails program, which will improve walking, biking and trail infrastructure in Indiana and bring economic, health, safety, recreational and other quality-of-life benefits to all of your constituents.

Additionally, please consider the importance of "funding" the existing trails maintenance fund and supporting a statewide trails economic impact study that would help our state secure more federal funds via grants such as RAISE, Reconnecting Communities and the Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment Program.

Trails are good for Indiana's economy. A 2019 study by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy concludes that cycling contributes over $1.6 billion dollars to our economy each year. Plus, with a state surplus, it is time to invest in Indiana's future by addressing long neglected infrastructure needs. Our state is currently ranked 22nd in the country for its trails system, and we have the opportunity to be #1 in the Midwest and in the Top 5 nationally given our efforts to complete our segment of the Great American Rail-Trail, not to mention our current achievement of 94% of Hoosiers being within 5 miles of a trail.
