Support Funding for Maryland Trails

The Maryland Transportation and Climate Alignment Act (TCA) would reduce pollution while creating new funding opportunities for trails, biking infrastructure and public transit in Maryland.

As a supporter of trails, biking and walking, I'm asking you to support the Maryland Transportation and Climate Alignment Act (H.B. 836/S.B. 681), when it reaches the Senate floor.

This smart policy, similar versions of which have already become law in two other states, encourages the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) to measure the increase in pollutants and/or vehicle miles traveled (VMT) from any large highway expansion projects it undertakes. Then, MDOT could mitigate those increases such as by increasing support to other transportation modes that would reduce pollution and vehicle miles traveled, like trail networks, walking and biking infrastructure, and public transit.

The TCA would help MDOT achieve its own climate goals and the state hit benchmarks required by the federal government. And it would increase funding for safe, connected rail networks like the Capital Trails Coalition network in Montgomery and Prince George's County and the Baltimore Greenway Trails Network.
