I am writing to urge you to protect funding for the Active Transportation Program (ATP) in the state budget, which the governor has targeted with $600 million in cuts.

While one of the smaller programs within the state's transportation budget, the ATP has an outsized effect, creating safer streets, sidewalks and trails, while helping to greenhouse gas emissions and giving Californians more transportation choices--especially in disadvantaged communities across the state.

We must recognize the critical importance of walking and bicycling projects to reduce pollution and congestion, and advance climate goals and equity for our communities. The Governor's May Budget proposal goes in the WRONG direction by drastically cutting the Active Transportation Program, which will cripple our ability to reduce bicycle and pedestrian fatalities and injuries for years to come.

It is bad public policy to close our budget deficit at the expense of our climate and safety.
