After Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed to slash $600 million from California’s largest funding source for trails, walking and biking projects, the California State Legislature has restored this critical funding in their proposal, but we still need to get the governor to agree.
While it's one of the smaller programs within the state’s transportation budget, the ATP has an outsized effect, creating safer streets, sidewalks and trails, while helping to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and giving Californians more transportation choices—especially in disadvantaged communities across the state.
The ATP is the most climate-, energy-, and equity-efficient program in the entire $21 billion transportation budget—and by preserving funding for this critical program, it shows legislators understand the importance of this funding.
Take action now: Thank your legislators today and urge them to stand strong in final negotiations with the governor to protect full funding for the Active Transportation Program (ATP) in the final state budget. Personalized messages work best: Tell your elected officials why funding for trails, walking and biking is important to you.
